Jennifer Crain – 2017 Women Build

Jennifer Crain and her three children (Nick, Mason, & Brooklyn) lived in a small two-bedroom apartment that did not meet their physical needs. Jennifer’s youngest child, Brooklyn, suffers from Noonan Syndrome, a congenital disorder, the principal features of which include heart defect, short stature, learning disabilities, impaired blood clotting, and other medical issues. Despite being a being a working, single mother, Jennifer was determined to provide her children with the stability a forever home would provide.

Jennifer was thrilled to partner with MacHabitat on our 2017 Women Build project and worked on several of her Habitat neighbors’ homes before being able to help build her own. The family was elated to move into their “Lovely House” in September 2017.

Lovely House by Mason, age 11

When the house is ready, it will be good and steady.
But when it’s done, we will all have fun.

The volunteers helped so much to build our house,
our lovely house so nice and steady.

I also love the ones that helped because
They made our lovely house.

Traci Spurgeon – 2015 Women Build

A Letter from Traci

I first learned of Habitat from a friend who handed me an application and said to go apply. Little did I know it was to be the best decision of my life. Having little knowledge and more than a few misconceptions of what Habitat was all about I had a lot to learn. The more I learned the prouder I became to be a part of such a great project. As we the applicants worked with the staff in meetings and classes everything became more exciting and clear. This was real. A whole neighborhood built by amazing volunteers and the people who live there. My children and I were going to have a house of our own, we would never have to move again or wonder where we would go once we outstayed our welcome. We belonged somewhere. Construction began July of 2015 and we moved in July 16th 2016. It was a long year full of hard work, a real education and sometimes difficult anticipation. All completely worth it! My kids each have their own room, McKinzie 10, McKinna 8 and Daxton 6. Something that they had never before been able to experience. One of the first things they did while even the boxes were still packed was to write up little signs stuck to their doors that said “Please ask before coming in my room”. They had their own little spaces and couldn’t be more happy about it. I truly hope that more families can experience what we have been able to accomplish with our house and our selves. Habitat is life changing and an amazing opportunity.

Thank you all

-Traci Spurgeon (Homeowner)

Street dedication party a resounding success

Thank you to everyone who attended our street dedication party in October! It was a wonderful day complete with a ribbon cutting on our new street and speeches from our founder, Bernie Turner, and one of our past Executive Directors, Marianne Mills. The McMinnville American Legion Post provided a color guard to kick off the march down the street followed by the McMinnville High School dance team. The festive celebrations ended back at the legion post with cookies and music from the Yamhillbillies.

Turner Way is slated for completion in early 2017. We would like to say a very special Thank You to our event sponsors, Washington Roofing and Gormley Plumbing and Mechanical for helping us build homes, community and hope in Yamhill County. Thank you also to the American Legion, MacHigh Dance Team, and all of our fabulous volunteers who made this day possible.

Cheers!

Message from our new Executive Director, Mary Stern!

It’s hard to believe that three months have gone by since I took the helm at MacHabitat.  It has truly been a whirlwind!  So much has happened in only a short amount of time.  I am thrilled to be part of this wonderful organization, that has been building homes, community, and hope for 25 years.

Shortly after I started, Traci Spurgeon and her three beautiful children moved into their new home at the Aspire development.  And by the end of the year, this wonderful family should have new neighbors in two adjacent homes.  Seeing the joy on the faces of our partner families has convinced me that I am doing the work I was meant to do.  It’s why our volunteers, donors, and business partners support MacHabitat’s work!

You may have noticed that the new street is going in at the new Aspire subdivision at Cumulus and Atlantic Streets in McMinnville.  Schmidt Excavating has been going gangbusters out there and we anticipate the road will be completed by mid-October.  This will open up access to 26 lots, which will bring the total to 34 homes for this subdivision. That means it’s time to celebrate!

Please join us for our Street Dedication party on Sunday, October 23, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Aspire development.  Our new street, Turner Way, is named for our beloved founder and friend, Bernie Turner.  With help from Gormley Plumbing and Washington Roofing, we are thrilled to be able to honor Bernie and 25 years’ worth of volunteers and supporters.  The Yamhillbillies will be playing, the Mac High Dance Team will be dancing, and our Snack Ladies will provide the treats . . . just like they do for our volunteers who work at the home construction sites.  I trust that it will be a beautiful Indian Summer day!

Thanks to each of you who has supported our important goal of ending poverty housing.  Because of your involvement, MacHabitat’s future is brighter than ever!
