Why we work for Habitat for Humanity

We are so blessed and thankful to have our home. I want to say “thank you” to our amazing community, volunteers, donors and Habitat’s amazing staff – without you, so many families would still be struggling and without hope for a better, brighter future. We didn’t just gain a home – we gained ties to our community, a sense of accomplishment, and hope. Thank you to everyone involved and I hope we can all help many more families’ dreams come true.

The lack of affordable housing in Yamhill County is becoming critical. At McMinnville Area Habitat for Humanity, we typically build 1-2 houses a year, which we then sell to low-income homebuyers. In 2023, we received funding from the OHCS Homeownership Development Incubator Program’s (HDIP) Development Subsidies to build 5 homes – and that is a game-changer for us. We added 6 homes to the affordable housing inventory in McMinnville just this year, and this support from OHCS has put us on a trajectory to build 5 more homes by this time next year. These home buyers will benefit from homeownership for years to come, and we remain dedicated to increasing the affordable housing inventory in Yamhill County with new construction.

Katie Curry, MacHabitat Executive Director

I hope that homeownership will bring my kids and I closer together. That there will be less stress in our house. That if something breaks it’s ours to fix. I don’t have to hide it or stress out that someone will find out. I hope to continue to grow and challenge myself. I saw somewhere that children of Habitat homes have a higher likelihood of owning a home themselves. I want a place our animals can live, where plants grow, where neighbors become family and years down the road my grandchildren will come to visit. And when I am gone there will be something left to pass on to my kids so they can live fuller lives.

Alexandrea Moore, MacHabitat Homeowner

The plan for our home is to make it our special place of peace and comfort, where the kids have a place to be safe and express their own styles, for us to decorate and choose what goes where, and to plant flowers in the yard. Your home is a reflection of you. Take care of it and it will last forever.
